Management of contaminated soil on industrial megasites in Germany.

Mr Horst Herzog is a geologist and working for 20 years for Infraserv. He has more than 25 years experience in contaminated land management, dealing with site investigation, risk assessment, site remediation for different types of contamination and industrial site development. He has been leading the remediation management of the 460 ha Industrial Site in Höchst and managing the aftercare of former industrial landfills. In this role he was stimulating the settlement of production plants in the Industrial Park Höchst, the remediation and management of mixed industrial contaminations, the regulation of liabilities between site owner/operator and tenants and the exchange of knowledge between industrial partners, service providers and academic institutes. He is based in Germany. He is currently as well the vice-chairman of the Nicole Industry Group, as well as a member of the soil protection group of the German Chemical Industrial Association VCI. Therefore Horst has a good overview on the industrial point of view in contaminated land management of megasites. The presentation will build on this experience and will highlight some key elements for a sustainable and practical contaminated soil management framework as well.
