Eleftheria Klontza is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Tourism Economics and Management at the University of the Aegean, Greece, specialising in Environmental Management and Planning in Tourism. She received her Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the Technical University of Crete, where she also obtained an M.Sc. in Quality Control and Environmental Management. She holds a B.Sc. in Environmental Studies from the University of the Aegean.
Her research and teaching focus on sustainable tourism development, the circular economy, the bioeconomy, and the environmental management of tourism businesses and destinations, with particular emphasis on resource efficiency, waste management, circular resource systems, and the transition to sustainable and resilient tourism models.
She has participated in numerous European and national research projects, including projects funded under Horizon Europe, Interreg, LIFE, and Erasmus+. Her recent research focuses on the valorisation of organic waste and biomass, the application of innovative circular economy technologies, and the integration of sustainability principles into the tourism sector.
Dr. Klontza has authored numerous publications in high-impact international peer-reviewed journals and has presented her research at international scientific conferences. She actively contributes to the international scientific community through research collaborations, peer review activities, editorial responsibilities, and participation in scientific committees. She also serves as Managing Editor of the international peer-reviewed journal Global NEST Journal and, since 2013, as a member of the Organising Committee of CEST.
Since 2020, she has been a Member of the Board of Directors of the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency (N.E.C.C.A.), Greece, contributing to national environmental governance and policy implementation.
