Ilias Pechlivanidis is an Associate Professor at SMHI and visiting researcher at Uppsala University in Sweden. He is the Vice-Chair of the WMO Research Board, the Deputy President of the EGU Hydrological Sciences Division, and a Fellow of ECMWF, while he serves as a Member in the Strategic Advisory Board of the Destination Earth initiative. He previously led the Analytics and Dissemination Centre for the Copernicus Emergency Management Service – Floods (2018–2024), and co-chaired the HEPEX community of practice (2018-2026). 

His research focuses on hydrometeorological forecasting, the impacts of environmental change, science communication, and the integration of Earth observations into early warning and climate services. He has played a leading role in co-creating operational multi-hazard early warning systems and user-driven hydro-climatic services across Europe and globally.
