Trihalomethanes (THMs) are volatile disinfection byproducts formed by the reaction of chlorine with organic and inorganic matter in pool water. The most common compound is chloroform, which can penetrate the body through the respiratory tract, skin and gastrointestinal tract. Long-term exposure to THMs can lead to health problems, including cancer risk. The article discusses modern strategies for monitoring and assessing the risk of THMs in the swimming pool environment. Key measures include regular measurement of THM concentrations in water, exposure modeling and risk assessments for different user groups. The research was based on a case study of 5 public swimming pools in southern Poland. The results indicate the need to adopt new disinfection strategies and sometimes to upgrade ventilation systems. Effective management of water quality in swimming pools is important for the health of users.
