It therefore presents a clear incorporation of the ecosystem approach between the status of natural resource systems and ecosystem services.
Specifically for the Mediterranean region, the climate change impacts, tourism and maritime transport should be considered as critical factors. The significant reduction of precipitation will stress natural and anthropogenic systems soon, while the area is the largest global tourism destination, attracting almost a third of the world’s international tourists (306 million out of 980 million worldwide). It is forecasted that the Mediterranean region will reach 500 million international tourist arrivals by 2030 (UNWTO 2012). Maritime transport is also a factor to consider, since the Mediterranean is among the world's busiest waterways, accounting for 15 % of global shipping activity, therefore creating pressures in the region.
The purpose of this study is to use ECOMARPOL platform to provide information on:
-Ports with waste reception and management facilities (Port Reception Facilities – PRFs)
o Vessel types
o Waste categories
-Estimation of waste quantity
-Environmental Management Systems in the ports
-Management / competent authorities
-Legislative framework
-Management, transport and disposal protocols
For the estimation of waste generated, a data set provided by marinetraffic.com has been analysed and the quantities for each of the 6 annexes of MARPOL 73/78 convention were derived. This estimation enables the port authorities and the related stakeholders to understand and predict the amount of waste delivered at each port based on the type, number and size of ships and the related travel time.

          Presenter:

            Dr Eleftheria Klontza

        Authors

          Eleftheria Klontza

          Demetris-Francis Lekkas

          Vassilis Zervakis

          Amalia Polydoropoulou
