Climate change is one of the most important issues of the contemporary world. The main reason of the phenomenon seems to be the greenhouse gases, a high quantity of which are due to energy production by using fossil fuel either for domestic use or transportation of the public. Scope of this research is to investigate the correlation of the “ecological” opinions, attitudes and practices according to answers for the New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) scale, to the energy consumption habits and practices of Cypriots for domestic use like air-conditioning, cooking and lighting as well as for transportation. A structured questionnaire was used to collect answers by a sample that was selected by implementing the non-random convenient sampling method. A statistical analysis was used in order to investigate if there is a relationship between environmental awareness of Cypriots and their relevant NEP scale score and the energy consumption habits and practices that they follow at their home and when they move either for business or personal reasons. The findings of this work will be useful for policy making, while the need for further education of the public for environmental and energy sustainability issues will also be evaluated and further research opportunities will be identified.
