Session 25 - Life Cycle Analysis (LCA)
Development of industrial bio-based systems: BIORADAR Project
CEST ID: cest2025_00138
Room Panacea | Fri 5 Sep 2025 | 16:20 - 16:30 pm
The bio-based economy is a key pillar of European policies for sustainable future, leveraging renewable biological resources, such as plants, microorganisms, and organic waste, to produce energy, materials and chemicals. This transition supports the European Green Deal’s goals of reducing fossil fuel dependency, ensuring food security, and decarbonizing the economy. However, the limited availability of land and resources in the EU presents challenges to achieving material circularity, mitigating carbon emissions, and addressing social impacts. To support this transition, reliable indicators and tools are essential to measure and improve the sustainability of bio-based systems.
The BIORADAR project addresses these challenges by developing a digital monitoring system for assessing the circularity, environmental impacts, and social sustainability of industrial bio-based systems. The project focuses on creating Material Circularity Indicators (MCIs) to measure system performance, developing methods to assess carbon capture and identifying opportunities for climate change mitigation across supply chains. Coordinated by YAGHMA B.V., BIORADAR unites seven European partners, working to provide policymakers and stakeholders with actionable insights and frameworks for a sustainable bio-based transition.
Next Technology Tecnotessile (NTT), as the lead of Work Package 1 (WP1), is responsible for assessing the environmental, economic and social sustainability of industrial bio-based systems. This includes Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), indirect Land Use Change (iLUC) Life Cycle Costing (LCC), Eco-Cost evaluation and Social LCA (S-LCA).
