Batteries, solar panels, wind turbines, electric vehicles and other green and digital technologies are inseparable from the use of critical raw materials, which in most cases are imported in the EU. In total, there are 34 critical materials listed in the European Critical Raw Materials Act (2024). Some of the critical raw materials, like neodymium (Nd) and boron (B) are also listed as strategic raw materials, i.e., exponential growth in demand of such elements is expected at the same time posing risks of supply disruption. Currently, 85% of Nd used in EU is imported from China and 99% of B from Turkey. Some of these CRM could be recycled from end-of-life products like wind turbines, electric vehicles and hard disk drives, however, existing technologies are rather limited. Hence, Horizon project NEO-CYCLE provides an interdisciplinary solution for upcycling of neodymium–iron–boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets from hard disk drives by provisioning technologies for Nd, Fe, B separation and ensuring high purities needed for applications in pharmaceutical, ammonia, fertilizers and polymers industries. To fulfil project ambition and ensure green transition, environmental, social and economic aspects of proposed processes and technologies including associated risks, circularity, and green logistics will be assessed. In addition, developed digital twins and mathematical modelling will support optimization of the processes, contributing to the green twin transition. To boost the uptake of the developed technologies, inclusive and sustainable business models will be created and fostered by the project partners in line with stakeholder engagement and various training for technical and soft skills development including gender issues in recycling industries.

Acknowledgements
Funding by the European Union under GA no. 101138058 is gratefully acknowledged.

          Presenter:

            R.
