Sustainable production in the tissue paper industry requires careful assessment of environmental performance, particularly in areas such as bleaching methods and effluent management. This article compares current bleaching and effluent treatment practices across the industry and assesses their compliance with environmental standards and sustainability indicators. The focus is on the environmental impact of bleaching technologies - including total chlorine free (TCF) processes and the use of optical brighteners - and the effectiveness of different wastewater treatment strategies used by tissue manufacturers. Both regulatory requirements and voluntary industry standards are analysed to understand how they influence environmental outcomes. The study highlights the importance of adopting advanced, low-impact technologies and aligning production practices with broader sustainability goals to improve the overall environmental footprint of tissue production.
