Session 20 - Wastewater treatment (4)
Treatment of Greywater from households in Palestine
CEST ID: cest2025_00266
Room Aegle B | Fri 5 Sep 2025 | 12:30 - 12:35 pm
Palestine faces a real water crisis, as the total available renewable water resources in the country in is less than 180 m3/capita/year, which is much below the WHO standard of 1000 m3/capita/year. Treated Greywater can be one of the potential additional sources of water when managed and treated properly. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the technical feasibility of a physicochemical treatment process for treating greywater from various sources in Palestinian households. The treatment process consists of mechanical filtration followed by adsorption with activated carbon. Greywater samples from various sources including shower, cloth washing machine and laundry washing sink were collected from different locations in Palestine. The physicochemical and biological characteristics of the greywater samples were measured. The study investigates the effects of operating parameters, including greywater properties (i.e., COD, pH, NH₃, BOD, PO₄³⁻), mechanical filter characteristics (i.e., filter material, particle size and height), and adsorption bed characteristics (type of activated carbon, particle size and bed height) on the treatment efficiency.
