Sewage sludge ash typically contains 10% P per weight and should be regarded as a secondary P source. An electrodialytic method is under development for the extraction and recycling of P. In this method, the ash is suspended in water, and an electric field is applied to a set of electrodes placed in two compartments separated by a cation exchange membrane. The anode is placed in the compartment with the ash suspension, and due to electrolysis at the anode, the suspension gradually acidifies resulting in the extraction of P. The heavy metals are extracted as well, but they are removed simultaneously from the suspension into the cathode compartment in the applied electric field. Previously it has been shown possible to extract more than 90% P and obtain a product with very low heavy metal concentration. In the current research, the behavior of REEs during the electrodialytic extraction from sewage sludge ash is in focus. The REE content in the investigated sewage sludge ash was, in total, about 125 mg/kg SSA. It was found that the REEs were co-extracted with P in the electrodialytic experiments. The lowest extraction percentages were around 60% (for Sc, La, and Eu), and the highest extractions of about 75% were obtained for Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu, i.e., the heavy REEs were extracted to the highest level. Since the REEs are in ionic form in a solution after EDR, separation for recovery is the next step to be investigated.

          Presenter:

            Prof Lisbeth Ottosen

        Authors

          Lisbeth Ottosen

          Ana Lima

          Huilin Li
