Each of us, individually and collectively, contributes to climate change and CO2 emissions, natural resource consumption, and social attitudes and behaviour. The fashion industry has a strict relationship to waste, as waste production is central to the operation of it.

According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (2017) and Voukkali et al., (2024) stated that the fashion industry releases 5000 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) each year and is responsible for 9% of Greenhouse gasses (GHGs) emissions worldwide, and more than third of the accumulation of microplastics in marine environments. 20% of industrial wastewater contamination if again due to the industry while 98 million tons of non-renewable sources, 93 billion cubic meters of water and more than 70 million barrels of oil are being consumed. In 2017 alone, 1.3 tons of raw materials and 104 cubic meters of water were consumed in the EU alone, resulting in 654 kg of CO2 eq. in emissions.

Fashion trends are expected to increase in value from 1.5 trillion dollars in 2020 to around 2.25 trillion dollars by 2025, indicating that the fashion demand is on the rise (Papamicahel et al., 2023). Circular Economy constitutes one of the main objectives in the reduction of the environmental burden of the fashion industry. Consumer behavior also plays a crucial role in the success of circular fashion initiatives.

After a deep fashion waste compositional analysis in Cyprus was estimate that consumers disposed of many quantities of ready to use clothes. Those cloths are been collected and export in other countries or donate in other families. Additionally, was found that consumers do not consider circular practices as well as do not buy second hand clothes.

          Presenters:

            Dr ANTONIS Zorpas

            Irene Voukkali

        Authors

          ANTONIS Zorpas

          Plotnic Olesea

          Demetris-Francis Lekkas

          Eleftheria Klontza

          Marinos Stylianou

          Irene Voukkali
