The ecoFABULAnds project (Innovating for future-proof agroecological, biodiverse, and sustainably productive landscapes of Europe, under the call “Accelerating farming systems transition» (AGROECOLOGY, Theme 2: Implementing agroecology at the landscape level”) aims to drive transformative change in European agricultural landscapes through agroecological innovation and circular economy principles. Spanning five diverse Living Labs (Germany, Italy, Ireland, Hungary and Cyprus) the initiative supports multi-actor, community-driven efforts for sustainable, inclusive, and resilient agrifood systems. A key focus is placed on rethinking food production and consumption through regionally adapted, bottom-up solutions that stimulate innovation, economic growth and behavioral change in alignment to regional and national agendas. The Cyprus Living Lab, situated in the Famagusta-Larnaca districts, serves as a model for circular economy approaches in resource-constrained environments. Central to its strategy is the valorization of agricultural and organic waste through the production and mainly application practices of compost and biochar as soil amendments. These bio-based inputs not only improve soil health and fertility but also contribute to carbon sequestration, water retention, and long-term land productivity. Cyprus leads a critical review of local biomass practices, drawing on the island’s rich agroecological traditions to identify and adapt sustainable innovations. Through inclusive stakeholder dialogues and co-creation workshops, the project will propose locally relevant strategies that will integrate waste recovery with soil regeneration. This approach will strengthen the regional circular economy by closing nutrient loops and reducing dependency on synthetic inputs.
