By combining laboratory and pilot-scale experimental data, we designed a scalable OMW biorefinery capable of extracting high-value products while minimizing waste. The process begins with the extraction of two valuable components: secondary oil, produced through acidification, and a phenolic-rich extract containing bioactive compounds such as tyrosol and hydroxytyrosol. The phenolic compounds were isolated using ultrafiltration and adsorption/desorption techniques with resins. These extraction processes were simulated and optimized using Aspen Plus to ensure efficiency and scalability. All residual solid and liquid streams generated during the extraction process were further utilized as feedstock for composting, resulting in the production of a high-quality soil amendment. This closed-loop approach ensures a zero-waste system, aligning with circular economy principles. To evaluate the feasibility and sustainability of the biorefinery, a comprehensive techno-economic analysis was conducted to estimate production costs and assess profitability across different scales. Additionally, a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was performed to identify environmental hotspots and propose strategies for improving the overall environmental performance of the process. The results demonstrate that the proposed biorefinery is a feasible, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly solution for OMW management. By transforming waste into valuable products, this approach not only addresses the environmental challenges associated with OMW disposal but also contributes to the sustainable utilization of agricultural by-products. This study highlights the potential of integrated biorefineries to drive innovation in waste valorization and promote sustainable industrial practices.

          Presenter:

            Pantelis Manakas

        Authors

          Pantelis Manakas

          Michael Stamatis

          D Theodosi Palimeri

          Lazaros Karaoglanoglou

          A Vlysidis
