Unifying the concepts of sustainable, conventional and green remediation

Dr. Paul Nathanail is GHD's Technical Director of contamination assessment and remediation. He led the working group that drafted ISO 18504:2017 on sustainable remediation. Paul has over 25 years' experience in consulting, teaching and researching risk based contaminated land management and sustainable brownfield remediation. He read Earth Sciences at Cambridge followed by a MSc in Engineering Geology and a PhD at Imperial College. Paul spent 24 years combining life as a consultant and a University academic - finishing up as Professor of Engineering Geology at the University of Nottingham. He and his team have developed the UK's most widely used and comprehensive set of soil screening levels - the S4ULs; the Dose - Response Roadmaps for identifying high risks to human health; written much guidance on risk based land contamination management and trained hundreds of practitioners and regulators. Paul led the working party that wrote ISO 18504:2017 on Sustainable Remediation. Paul is a member of the EU-China panel on land and soil (SEPLS); chair of the UK National Brownfield Network; Director of SiLC Register Ltd, Land Quality Management Ltd and CABERNET (European Brownfield Network). He runs the popular Contaminated-Land-MAnagement-Strategies JISCMail email list and the Linkedin Contaminated Land Management group with over 4500 members from around the world.
